Richard W Black Senior Community Center Hanover
Nature of Work: 23,000 SF new construction
Location: Hanover, New Hampshire
This project won the Associated Builders and Contractors New Hampshire/Vermont Construction Excellence Award.
Working with an in-town site, a tight budget, and a diverse set of user interests and priorities, the Richard W. Black Community and Senior Center Project involved the skilled orchestration of construction around the needs of multi-users, each with a unique set of interests and requirements. The 23,000-square-foot facility supports the needs of area senior citizens and is home to the Hanover Recreation Department.
The narrow, triangular-shaped building site, bordered by one of Hanover’s busiest intersections, as well as multi-family housing and private residences, drove design criteria.
The final design incorporated several activity rooms of different sizes so the Center could accommodate meetings of 3 people, or 200.
The designs included a 30’ x 40’ multi-purpose room, a senior lounge, a health-screening room, a community and senior crafts room, a lounge area, various activity rooms, a card room, a meeting space for nonprofit groups, and a community dining room. The dining area can be expanded into the multi-purpose area to seat larger groups. The basement area accommodates complete equipment storage for the Town’s busy recreation program.
