New England Center for the Circus Arts
Nature of Work: 8,600 SF new construction of a performance trapezium, secondary studios, offices, classrooms, and outdoor areas
Location: Brattleboro, Vermont
The success of New England Center for the Circus Arts (NECCA) led to some growing pains as it became clear the original facilities were too small. Bursting at the seams with 6,000 students from all over the world, studio restrictions ran from low ceiling height, to lack of air conditioning, to poor seating for audiences.
The new 8,600-square-foot facility was designed to meet every need, from training to performance to administration. The metal building featured concave wings and windows, designed to appear inviting with clear views of performers in the air and tumbling.
The first custom-built circus arts building in the U.S. included a 5,800-square-foot “trapezium” with a 40-foot ceiling. The structure also featured 1,400 square feet dedicated to a reception office, vestibule, restrooms, and a second-floor mezzanine. Other benefits included handicapped accessibility and a much larger performance space than the organization ever previously enjoyed.
NECCA’s new facility enables faculty to teach any circus skill imaginable, as well as host performers, circus companies, educational conferences, and circus festivals.
