Nature of Work: 2,800 SF of new construction

Location: Thetford, Vermont

Trumbull-Nelson worked closely with an active, retired couple who drew inspiration for their new, down-sized residence from Susan Susanka's book, Creating the Not So Big House: Insights and Ideas for the New American Home.

The owners commissioned their son, a Professional Engineer, to draw up plans using SketchUp, the Google software for designers and engineers. Weekly meetings allowed T-N time to collaborate with the Owners to cater the design of the house, and many of the characteristic features in the house, based on their input. That is not to say that the plans were loose—the design was written out to completion before building began—but the ideas could still flow.

The house features cathedral ceilings in the central rooms, making the house feel more expansive. The different angles and changes in the roofline created an open-but-separate feel in the center of the house. The result of the complicated roof design is that the living room flows into all the other areas of the house—the dining area, kitchen, and into the upstairs—but because of the variations in the roof, they all feel like separate spaces.

In the end, what Trumbull-Nelson and the Owners created is indeed an elegant, but not-so-simple, big- feeling compact house.
