Dartmouth College Corey Ford Rugby Clubhouse

Nature of Work: 6,000 sf new construction

Location: Hanover, New Hampshire

Trumbull-Nelson was selected by Dartmouth College to work closely with the College as Construction Manager for this important addition to the College. The Clubhouse is a facility that is unmatched in the spectrum of collegiate athletics.

Following T-N’s selection, the start of the Project was delayed due to various efforts to relocate the site. About two years prior to construction, former Dartmouth President James Wright determined it was time for the Project to proceed. With President Wright’s support, the Clubhouse returned to the originally planned site. Despite the construction schedule having been plagued in its early stages by uncooperative weather, Trumbull-Nelson’s team persevered and the Project was finally realized. 

Several months prior to construction, Trumbull-Nelson helped Dartmouth establish an initial budget. After receiving approval to proceed with project planning, we began working with the College’s Planning Design & Project Management office and Architect Randall Mudge to refine the cost. 

Our Pre-construction Services for this Project included an analysis of various construction assemblies and sequencing to uncover potential cost savings for the College. We weighed cost implications related to various alternatives, updating both the estimate and schedule as the final construction documents were developed to ensure that final assembly details remained within the construction budget and timeframe. 

The building sits in a landscaped bank that creates a natural amphitheater overlooking George Brophy ‘56 Field to the south. The overall site is positioned in a hollow, a setting that capitalizes on the beauty of nearby Balch Hill to the east and woods on two sides of Brophy Field.

The exterior, with its eye-catching western red cedar shingles is accented by the forest green paint on shutters and the forged metal railing that curves around the Kilmartin Deck.
