New ADA-Accessible Georgian Residence

Nature of Work: 13,400 SF new construction of fully ADA-accessible home

Location: Hanover, New Hampshire

Trumbull-Nelson completed this handsome brick home, which surveys its New Hampshire surroundings with Georgian dignity, commanding the site as it might have done two centuries ago. Its various extensions and connectors appear to have been added gradually over the years to accommodate expanding needs and changing times. But appearances can be deceiving, and this rambling residence embraces the future rather than the past. In addition to all the amenities of a new custom dwelling, the house encompasses state-of-the-art electronics, a series of fully integrated systems for managing the home and - most surprising - a barrier-free, completely accessible environment for the paraplegic owner.

Casework everywhere was customized to permit unhindered wheelchair passage through doorways and down halls. Even the elevator that makes the entire dwelling accessible to the owner carries custom touches - cherry-paneled doors and a maple floor.

To help the homeowner maintain a self-sufficient lifestyle, many of the home's doors swing open on approach and close automatically. A hydraulic lift was installed in the master bath spa, and a host of smaller custom details such as voice response provide an even greater measure of independence.

The impression of separate but inter-connected buildings, mixture of traditional materials and styles, and rambling floor plan add to the home's uniqueness. At the front of the property, the two-story brick structure contains the formal living room and study downstairs, with bedrooms above; its clapboard extension to the side is given over to an ample master bedroom suite.

Stretching towards the rear, a Cape Cod-style wing houses the formal dining room, music room, kitchen and laundry. It is joined by another wing devoted to a large family room and an exercise area, which meets the garage.

Finally, an all-season conservatory/gazebo fits comfortably with both formal and informal styles and lies within easy reach of the majority of first-floor living areas. One of the owners' high-priority items, the gazebo-inspired space allows them to take in the outdoors even during cold New Hampshire winters.
