Building Simply:
Trumbull-Nelson's Design/Build Capabilities Make It Easy To Fast-Track Key Projects

by Geoff Calver

Luminescent System’s Inc.

Does a large project—one that creates substantial space for people, equipment, work, or recreation—have to be complex? How can we fast-track our project to give us the space we needed yesterday, as soon as we can get it? How can I be more certain about all the costs involved in getting a project completed? These are questions Trumbull-Nelson answers every day, and for an increasing number of clients the answer is found in a Design/Build approach.

Design/Build offers the ability to design, engineer, and construct a building, merging what typically requires several different processes (and payments) into one. This is possible because Trumbull-Nelson goes beyond the conventions of what is generally expected of a construction company. Trumbull-Nelson has made a name for itself building base lodges and art galleries, barns and warehouses, houses and dorms, and everything in between. Not only does Trumbull-Nelson have the ability to construct everything from huge projects to small, they can also help create buildings like the barn at Birch Hill Farm in a manner that puts a portion of the design as well as the construction process in their hands. It is a way of building that simplifies the process, making it faster, less complex, and more responsive to the needs of the customer. On many projects, Trumbull-Nelson works closely with Butler Building Systems to combine preliminary design criteria with structural requirements to enhance a building's functionality. For example, on the Birch Hill Riding Arena project, in South Woodstock, Vermont, Trumbull-Nelson worked closely with Ertel Associates Architects, of Woodstock, Vermont and Butler Manufacturing to create a premier indoor riding and training facility.

Ed Friedman, the lead designer at Trumbull-Nelson's Design/Build team, is not just a fantastic designer, he is also LEED certified. And it is his LEED certification, combined with his skills in the Design/Build realm, that makes him a great example of what Trumbull-
Nelson has always excelled at— the ability to offer many different resources within one company.

"The biggest advantage of Design/Build is that it provides single-source responsibility."

When asked about why Design/Build makes Trumbull-Nelson stand apart from the competition, Director of
Sales and Marketing Steve Usle said, “It's an additional resource, and it just highlights the many different options that we offer. It offers the convenience of one-stop shopping for clients.”

And Design/Build is indeed an impressive asset, providing a huge advantage for companies looking to build quickly and efficiently. “The biggest advantage of Design/Build,” says Usle, “is that it provides single-source responsibility. The Design/Builder takes responsibility for protecting the budget as design occurs and works collaboratively with the client to meet performance requirements.”

Design/Build isn’t appropriate for every building project. As Mr. Usle points out, “It would definitely appeal most to someone who wants to put a project on the fast-track. For instance, when you’re putting together a Design/Build construction project, you can start pouring the foundation even as you’re still deciding on the final design.”

Some of those projects have become landmarks in the area—prominent buildings that house large industries, employ many people within, and are hallmarks of local economies. For instance, Usle points out New England Electric Wire Corporation’s facility in Lisbon, New Hampshire.

"It would definitely appeal most to someone who wants to put a project on the fast-track."

In 2001, Trumbull-Nelson’s Design/Build team was hired to build a 120,000-square-foot addition that would double the size of New England Electric Wire Corporation’s already enormous facility. New England Electric Wire wanted to add 26,000 square feet of offices and lab space, while also creating an additional 98,000 square feet of manufacturing space.

In addition, structures can be found throughout the Upper Valley that emphasize the extent to which Trumbull-Nelson’s Design/Build team is utilized in the region. Just off of Route 120, approaching the hill leading up towards Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, you’ll find the Miller Auto Group Building. Nearby, on Airport Road in West Lebanon, are the Nordica USA headquarters and distribution center. Just off of Route 120, on LaBombard Road almost directly across from the Miller Auto Group Building, is the FedEx Shipment Center. And just up Route 120 in Centerra Park in Lebanon is Luminescent System’s 82,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. And in Woodstock,
Vermont, Trumbull-Nelson recently completed a new town garage.

The Upper Valley and the area beyond it are full of fine examples of Trumbull-Nelson’s Design/Build capabilities. “It's something,” says Usle, “that we are very proud of.”
