A Feeling of Community

One of my favorite projects from this past year has been the construction of the Co-op Community Market on Lyme Road in Hanover. While the project has many notable technical aspects, from geothermal heating and cooling to daylight harvesting electrical lighting systems, I’m most proud of the human aspects. First we were honored that the Co-op chose us to build the structure many see as a symbolic center of the recently defined Dresden Village area. As Dartmouth moves forward with plans to construct housing at the Rivercrest site, this area that is already home to Hanover’s elementary and middle schools will begin to support a denser population. Additions like the Co-op Community Market will enable the residents to find more of what they need within an easy of walk of their home. With two Advance Transit stops already in the neighborhood, it is one of the few neigborhoods in the Upper Valley where a car is not a necessity, and that improves the quality of life for everyone. These quality-of-life considerations were paramount in the Co-op’s planning for this project, and we embraced their goals throughout the construction process.

Our contribution makes us feel even more a part of both the Dresden Village, and the whole Hanover community. In future issues we expect to tell you about the progress with the renovation and addition at the Grantham Village School, a project that has only been able to get off the ground due to strong community support. Last year, as we looked back on our first 90 years, we took great pride in remembering the buildings constructed by Trumbull-Nelson that have stood the test of time and become the pillars of the Upper Valley. We’re thrilled that projects we complete today will take their place beside those, and continue to strengthen the communities in which we live.
